PILOT STORIES: Contract Pilots

In 1926, the Post Office Department began transferring airmail responsibility to private companies. Dozens of aviation companies were sprouting up, and most sought airmail contracts to maintain a steady income for their survival and growth. The new airlines hired ex-postal pilots as well as flyers who had not yet had to fly to the dictates of schedule maintenance.
