The July 17, 1897 headline from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The phrase, "a ton of gold," referring to the amount brought off of the ships arriving from Alaska, was first used in this story. When the magical  phrase was repeated in story after story about the Klondike, it helped capture the public imagination and promoted the rush.
