19th Century History

The United States grew and changed tremendously during the 19th century. You are studying the effects and changes of the Civil War, immigration, Manifest Destiny, Indian policy, international relations, mining, and exploration during this 100 year period. All of these events had a tremendous impact on the people who lived in the U.S. territories and states bounded by the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean.

This brief section will give you touch points for connecting the history of communication to your existing lessons in American History on three major themes: the Civil War, Westward Expansion, and the Gold Rush. Including a brief summary, it highlights web resources on the Postal Museum site for primary sources, secondary research articles, and games that relate to the topic.
