This stamp reinforces Benjamin Franklin’s association with American mail service, but it also familiarizes the viewer with a prominent work of art. The portrait of Franklin is based on a famous painting made in Paris by J.S. Duplessis around 1785; that earlier work is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, another Smithsonian museum.
