For his portrait of Robert E. Lee, Mark Hess chose to emphasize the pride and dignity of the Confederate general while also highlighting his appearance on the battlefield. Lee is wearing his field uniform, which shows colonel’s stars, rather than his dress uniform with a general’s wreath.
