Working the Truck Terminal
Other
When I first started, I started at 21, and back then you started as a sub and I worked the truck terminal, any place they wanted to send me and my main place was in the truck terminal unloading trucks. They didn’t have any heat in the winter time and they used to back the truck up to the platform and the driver opened the door and as far as the door was, that’s where the sacks went. We had one little string hanging out and the man would pull the string and all of the bags would fall off and it was your job to pick them up and put them wherever they had to go. Back then we had doors that opened up in the floor and you threw the sacks down there. Back then we had Sears catalogues, Life magazines. They were large, really big, and we used to get in line and pass them down. It was cold, and you had no heat, and that was your job.
