On March 18, 1920, Crader made a forced landing near Orangeville, Ohio after his motor started sputtering as though it was not getting enough gas. "I dived ship trying to get gas to reach the motor, pumped up more air pressure, but motor completely dead. I passed over trees and dropped into a field, completely wrecking ship." After the mail was retrieved, it was forwarded to Sharpville, Pennsylvania.
The next month, he made a forced landing near Gorton State, Pennsylvania, forty miles west of Bellefonte after his motor began vibrating excessively. Over mountainous country, the landing was difficult, and Crader suffered cuts on his face, hands and legs in the crash but refused attempts to get him to a hospital.
