These covers provide physical evidence of mail service that was disrupted by natural or human-caused events—including earthquakes, fires, floods, tornadoes, tsunamis, epidemics, bombings, wars, and robberies. Although the postal service makes great efforts to continue delivery, such conflicts and disasters interfere with part or all of postal operations. Surviving mail is often rare.
