2-cent Valley Forge Sesquicentenary Washington at prayer single

This commemorative honored the 150th anniversary of George Washington's encampment at Valley Forge. The single red 2-cent stamp was issued on May 26, 1928. It depicts Washington kneeling in prayer at Valley Forge. The bitter winter of 1777-1778 took a tremendous toll on Washington's forces, but with the aid of the French and other Europeans, including German General Friedrich Von Steuben (1730-1794), a viable fighting force was regained. The follow-on to Valley Forge was the famous crossing of the Delaware River and the successful campaigns at Trenton and Monmouth.
