3-cent Georgia Bicentennial James Edward Oglethorpe single

Issued on February 12, 1933, this violet 3-cent stamp honored the 200th anniversary of the landing of General James Oglethorpe (1696-1785) at Savannah in 1733. Oglethorpe established a British settlement there, which eventually led to the defeat of Spanish forces and creation of the colony of Georgia. The portrait shown was taken from a painting by an unknown English artist.
