The 50th anniversary of the founding of the Pan-American Union was commemorated with a 3-cent light violet stamp issued on April 14, 1940. The Pan-American Union was formed in 1890 to promote the bonds of friendship and good will among the American republics (the U.S. and nations of Central and South America). It transformed into the Organization of American States in 1970. The stamp design shows a portion of Botticelli's painting 'Spring', featuring three feminine figures with clasped hands.
