The achievements of the United States Marine Corps in World War II were honored by a 3-cent green stamp issued on July 11, 1945. The design reproduces the famous photograph of a group of Marines raising the United States flag over Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. The scene was captured soon after by sculptor Felix W. de Weldon, then on duty with the U.S. Navy. His sculpture in bronze now stands at the United States Marine Corps Memorial, just across the Potomac River from Washington, District of Columbia.
