A 3-cent brown violet stamp issued on October 16, 1946, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Kearny expedition in New Mexico. Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny commanded several expeditions through western territories. His 1846 expedition in conjunction with the Mexican-American War took him to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he established American authority, with himself as military governor. Subsequent expeditions took Kearny to California, where he was engaged in several battles and again became military governor.
