3-cent William Allen White single

A 3-cent red violet stamp issued July 31, 1948, honors William Allen White (1868-1944). A small town journalist, White's writings attracted nationwide attention. He owned the Emporia (Kansas) Gazette and was known as the 'Sage of Emporia'. His political writings and advice influenced politicians at all levels of government, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to whom White recommended the appointment of Felix Frankfurter to the Supreme Court. The stamp featuring White's portrait follows the same format as the Famous American Authors Series of 1940.
