The central design features the old Niagara Railway Suspension Bridge which joined the two countries at Niagara Falls. The first bridge opened in 1848 and was replaced in 1855 by a double decker suspension bridge with rail on top, which was in turn was replaced by the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, a steel arch, in 1897.
