3-cent Battle of Brooklyn single

The Department issued this 3-cent stamp through the Brooklyn, New York, post office on December 10, 1951, to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn. The central design of the stamp depicts the evacuation of General Washington's troops from Brooklyn at the site of the Fulton Ferry house. Dominating the left central part of the scene, General Washington appears mounted on his white charger, directing his troops. A part of the Fulton Ferry house is shown on the right, and in the distant center, troops already embarked are seen crossing the East River. Across the top appears, "United States Postage" in whiteface Roman. Incorporated and arranged vertically in ornamental scrolls on each side of the stamp appear the numerals "1776" and "1951." Arranged in two lines in dark Gothic, on a ribbon and centered at the bottom of the stamp is the wording, "Washington Saves His Army at Brooklyn." Arranged in each lower corner, an ornamental shield provides the frame for the denomination "3c."

The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. The printing of 110 million copies of this stamp was authorized.
