For this stamp, one of four illustrating the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus, the Postal Service commissioned artist Richard Schlecht. Trained as an Army illustrator and known for specializing in underwater archaeology and maritime history, Schlecht brought his remarkable eye for detail to this painting, ensuring a sense of authenticity as well as drama.
