Pencil on paper
Once a popular method of reproducing art, engraving no longer figures prominently on U.S. postage stamps, but this World War I stamp demanded a traditional approach. Robert A. Anderson created a lead-pencil drawing that was later engraved by Czeslaw Slania, a world-renowned stamp engraver. Slania’s detailed work, the result of breathtaking patience, has appeared on more than a thousand stamps worldwide.
