Country and Western Music: Patsy Cline

painting of Patsy Cline

Artist: Richard Waldrep
Art director: Howard E. Paine
First day of issue: September 25, 1993

Airbrush and ink on paper taped to board

Depicting country-music legend Patsy Cline in one of her typically elaborate costumes was the logical choice for painter Richard Waldrep. Cline’s jacket was blue in earlier versions of the artwork, but Waldrep altered it, providing a sharper contrast on the printed stamp and better representing Cline’s flair for showmanship.
