Dean Mitchell’s jazzy portrait of Louis Armstrong entertained millions of stamp buyers in 1995. One year earlier, the Postal Service found that Armstrong was the most requested male subject, prompting the issuance of this stamp not only on a pane with nine other musicians, but also by itself.
