The House of the Temple, located at 1733 16th Street, NW in the District of Columbia, is the national Headquarters of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction, USA. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, located in southwest Turkey and one of the ancient world’s seven wonders, inspired its architect, John Russell Pope. The Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia laid the cornerstone in 1911, and the building was completed in 1915.

This envelope commemorates the bicentennial of Scottish Rite Free Masonry in America. It features views of the House of the Temple and Shepheard’s Tavern, in Charlestown, South Carolina, where, in 1736, powerful Charleston business men formed the first lodge of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry.
