The first U.S. airmail stamp is also the most famous. When a sheet of the 1918 24-cent airmail stamp with the airplane vignette inverted relative to the frame, philatelic history was made. Since 1918, a number of notable aircraft and aviation pioneers have been celebrated on U.S. airmail stamps.
