Trade and Commerce

Trade drives nearly all exploration. It was an early occurrence of the contact period in the Americas. The crude bartering of early fur-traders gave way to elaborate trading networks operated by colonial trading companies. The growing scale of the new mercantilism exhausted much of the animal resources that supported Native domestic economies, forcing adaptations to new forms of survival.
