An island in the West Indies. A British colony since the 18th century, Grenada became an independent state in 1974. A military coup in 1983 prompted an invasion by the United States, with the participation of six neighboring Caribbean nations. Cuban military advisers were expelled, and civilian government was restored. Allied forces withdrew in 1985.
