Republic in south-central Asia. Pakistan was formed in 1947 from the predominantly Moslem areas of India. In April 1971, Eastern Pakistan seceded and, in December 1971, after the Indo-Pakistani War, became independent as the Republic of Bangladesh. Tension with India has remained at a high level since the two countries became independent, and a number of wars have resolved little. Both nations maintain relatively large military forces and effective, if rudimentary, nuclear arsenals.
