On April 9, 1865, almost four years to the day of the start of the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The surrender of Lee’s forces signaled the end of a civil war which had cost the lives of over 600,000 Americans.
