Letters from World War I

Wartime epistolary novel

Description

The creators of Dere Mable and Dere Bill books told stories of a soldier and his sweetheart through their correspondence. Lieutenant Edward Streeter started the series for the 27th Division's magazine Gas Attack. The characters were prone to misspellings and misunderstanding of each other's letters; these mistakes were part of the intended humor. Over 700,000 copies of Dere Mable had been sold by 1919 when a third book—That's Me All Over, Mable—was published.
