Writer Ernest Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. This 25-cent stamp honoring him was issued July 17, 1989.

On October 8, the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Romanian-born German novelist Herta Müller. The Swedish Academy who picked Ms. Müller for the Prize described her as a writer “who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.”
