The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project marked the last Apollo Program flight. When the Apollo spacecraft docked with Soyuz 19 on July 17, 1974, it became the first link up of an American spacecraft with a Soviet spacecraft. The iconic images of the handshakes of the two crews across the hatch of their spacecrafts were broadcast around the world. The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project effectively ended the US-Soviet space race.
The United States Postal Service issued two commemorative postage stamps on July 15, 1975, the one year anniversary of the launch day of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts. One stamp features a design by American Robert McCall depicting a post link-up view of the two spacecraft. The second stamp features a design by Russian artist Anatoly Aksamit depicting the scene before the two spacecraft linked-up. These same stamp designs were issued simultaneously in the United States and the Soviet Union.
