Everglades National Park encompasses a fifth of the larger Everglades Ecosystem, the largest sub-tropical wilderness the United States. Known as the “River of Grass” for the abundant saw grass marshes, the Everglades are actually a mosaic of ponds, prairies, and upland forests. The river at some points is 60 miles wide even though at some points it only has a depth of six inches.
