The Route

Pony Express Map
This map, produced in 1961, shows the Pony Express route between Sacramento, California, and St. Joseph, Missouri.
Courtesy of the Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress.

The late 1950s and early 1960s were the second peak period of Pony Express activity in American popular culture. Riding the wave of the centennial of the service in 1960 were movies, magazine articles, and books, not to mention countless individual contributions of artwork, songs, and even poetry.
