Ella Fitzgerald began singing in the mid 1930s and had her first number one hit with "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" in 1938 at the age of twenty-one. Fitzgerald spent close to sixty years professionally performing music. By the time of her death in 1996, Fitzgerald had received 13 Grammy Awards and albums that she had performed on had sold over 40 million copies.
