Korean War

Paul to His Wife and Family
From Korea; February 20, 1951

This story of survival was discovered in a wastebasket of a Chicago bank in 2001. The two pages of the letter appear to be missing at least a line of type, perhaps lost when the letter was photocopied. Likely dictated from his hospital bed, the letter has all the energy and emotion of a firsthand, battlefront account and ends with a bittersweet postscript yearning for a taste of home: “What’s left of the squad would still like to have your cookies!”
