The immediate application for this new technology was the Atomic bomb. With more practice, planning, and refining, the scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratories tested the first atomic bomb in July of 1945. By that Germany had been defeated in Europe, so only the Japanese were left to face this harrowing tool of destruction. In August 1945, after repeated warnings and unsuccessful attempts at garnering surrender, President Truman ordered the deployment of an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, Following the dropping of a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki three days later, the Japanese surrendered. Though thousands suffered from the effects of these two bombs, millions of American and Japanese lives were saved by eliminating the need for an Allied land invasion of Japan to end the war.
