My Years As a Postal Carrier
Traumatic Events
Right out of the service to my country as a Navy man, I went and took the postal exam...Since I got out of the service in August of 1969, I had to find a spot for me as soon as I could...My wife, Jeanne and I had already had Todd, our first baby...It wasn't easy living on $200.00 dollars a month, but we made it...Those trips I took to Vietnam on the USS Ogden carrying the troops to war, are ever fresh in my mind, but now I need to tell this story...When I was about 5, my brother, as mischievous as he was, decided he would like to surprise the mailman by putting me in the mailbox...I did as I was told, and our mailman sure got a surprise out on our farm! And when I was offered a job as a rural letter carrier, guess where I was posted? Yup, my route was our farm! Looking back to all my 31 years of service as a mail carrier, I enjoyed telling this experience to my fellow carriers the most...I wish I could enclose the old picture of me with my cart, Phil with a donkey, and Stan the mailman, and our Postal Jeep Standing the times of letter carriers from the Meridian, Idaho branch...No regrets...And sometimes I even dream being back on the job, but alas, Parkinson's has settled in from my Navy days, breathing Agent Orange...I hope you enjoyed my story as told by my wife, Jeanne...Take Care!
