While serving as an airmail pilot, William Holcomb made a forced landing on September 24, 1920. That morning, Holcomb was flying from Chicago with the westbound mail when the connecting rod came loose on his aircraft, busting the crank case. Holcomb was forced down at 8 a.m. at Glenn Ellyn, Illinois, on land owned by Mr. Thomas Stanton. When Holcomb landed, he hit a hole in the field and the airplane nosed over, breaking the propeller and radiator. Holcomb got the mail to nearby Springfield, Illinois and it was forwarded on to Omaha, Nebraska.
