James C. Hamilton, Ph.D.

A retired administrator and historian, James Hamilton is a life-long stamp collector with interests in Great Britain and the Dominions, Captain James Cook stamps and covers, as well as Vatican City stamps. He writes articles on new Vatican City stamp issues for Vatican Notes, the journal of the Vatican Philatelic Society, and also publishes research articles on Vatican City stamps. The topics of recent or forthcoming articles include the Roman Basilica di San Clemente, Vatican City joint stamp issues, and Vatican City Cartophilately. Other research interests focus on the voyages of Captain James Cook. He has published several articles on Cook's travels to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic and he is researching the scientific aspects of Cook's voyages in high southern latitudes. His publications have been printed in Cook's Log and American Philatelist.

Hamilton taught college courses in European and British history and also served as an administrator of college programs, as well medical administrator. He earned B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in European History at the University of Iowa. He retired in 2006.
