Job Security
Why I Joined
I got out of the Army in 1958. There was lay off after lay off in the Eisenhower administration and, in order to have a job, I joined the Army in 1956. The day after I was discharged, I went to the personnel office and was put into a hiring pool and 2 weeks later was called to work at a spark plant. In early 1959 I passed the test to come to work at the Post Office. I took a pay cut for job security, and I don’t regret my decision. The Spark plant where I worked closed down.
