W. J. McCandless was not an airmail pilot, but the Superintendent of the Chicago – Omaha Aerial Mail Division. He was killed on May 12, 1920 when an airmail airplane piloted by W. H. Johnson was blown through a tree. Johnson was injured, and McCandless was killed in the collision.
