Streets of Houston
Toughest Day
The most difficult thing was there were 15,000 streets in Houston and there is no rhyme or reason, just north, south, east, and west, parallel, and we had to memorize them. You were under a lot of pressure because if you couldn’t pass your scheme test you would get fired. A scheme was like street so and so going to zone so and so. Say 100 Main Street went to Zone 2 which was the whole business mail and if you didn’t know where it went you could end up sending it all over town because they had about 45 stations in Houston. You had to learn your schemes to get it to go to the right station.
