- Excavated in 1922 or 1923 by archaeologist John Alden Mason (1885-1967), then on the staff of the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago, Illinois) and a member of the Marshall Field Archaeological Expedition to Colombia; acquired by MAI in 1925 through an exchange with the Field Museum.
