Biographical History
Henri Stehlé (1909-1983) was a French agronomist, botanist, and ecologist. He researched and collected plants in the French Antilles, primarily on the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, between 1936 and 1977. Much of his work focused on two plant families: Orchidaceae and Piperaceae. Stehlé often collected alongside his wife, Madeleine, and Reverend Father L. Quentin. While a professor at Jardin d'Essais in Tivoli, Martinique, Stehlé collaborated with the New York Botanical Garden, often sending plant collections from the islands. During his career, Stehlé served as the Director of the Centre de Recherche Agronomique aux Antilles and the Director of Pointe à Pitre Experimental Gardens, both in Guadeloupe, and established Schools of Agriculture in both Guadeloupe and Martinique. Stehlé died on February 19, 1983, while working to complete his "Histoire botanique, écologique et agricole des Antilles françaises, des Caraïbes à nos jours".
