- Whistler’s title cites Paimpol, a Breton town north of Vitré, but the actual location of this timbered French house remains uncertain. The artist takes pleasure in the structure’s details, emphasizing the geometries of the old building with his judicious use of red and gray inks to enhance the otherwise black drawing. Whistler told his London printer, Thomas Way, “You will see the value of the three colours and that it does not want more.”
