- Greengrocers numbered among Whistler’s favorite shop-front motifs. Here, he visualized the flattened, closely cropped façade with its multipaned window grid to create a sense of controlled bounty. Single rectangles of glass frame individual bottles, each one carefully positioned on a top shelf within the store. A symmetrical display of artistically heaped fruits and vegetables spreads across a middle tier of shelves, while indistinct forms tumble across the lowest row of windows, with a shelf of produce out front. On the sidewalk, two large baskets brim over with large leafy vegetables.
- Whistler etchings are identified by "G" numbers as assigned in "James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, a catalogue raisonné," by Margaret F. McDonald, Grischka Petri, Meg Hausberg, and Joanna Meacock (University of Glasgow, 2012), http://etchings.arts.gla.ac.uk. This print is G264 state 2 of 2.
