Landscape
Object Details

- Watanabe Gentai was an accomplished painter in the Chinese styles that were practiced by painters of the Nanga and Nagasaki schools. Gentai studied painting with Watanabe Sosui, a native of Edo who later moved to Nagasaki, an important center for the importation and practice of Chinese painting. This evocative and expressive painting of an early spring landscape has a serene quality that derives from works of the Chinese Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).
