Chinese soldiers carry a Korean princess as they flee from a Japanese attack
Object Details
- Label
- This dramatic scene, set in a mountainous landscape setting, portrays a group of Chinese soldiers led by their commander, fleeing in the face of a Japanese attack, represented only by the battle flag visible over the rocky emankment at left. A soldier carries a Korean woman on his back as shells burst behind them. Only two figures in this scene are identified: the Korean princess, and the Chinese commander, Yeh Chih-chao. This print probably portrays Yeh's retreat from the battle at Asan, South Korea, 30 July 1894, which took place in the first week of the Japanese First Army's sweep through the Korean Peninsula. General Yeh was court martialed in Beijing and beheaded in 1896 for his retreat in this battle.
