The Actor Sakata Hangoro II

- Portraits of actors in fan-shaped frames were popular from the late 1860s. They were published both as books and as single-sheet prints. Some of the prints were actually mounted on folding-fan frames. Here Shunko, a talented pupil of Shunsho, renders the heavy-set actor Sakata Hangoro II (1724-1782). Shunko's skill in composition is displayed in the pose and placement of the actor within the unusual format. The role shown here may be that of a sumo wrestler.
