Blue and white jockey silks worn by Marlon St. Julien

Object Details

Caption
In 2000 Marlon St. Julien became the first African American to race in the Kentucky Derby in almost eighty years. These jockey silks are from his illustrious career.
Description
Custom made jockey silks worn by Marlon St. Julien. The pale blue, white, and gray jersey jacket is made from synthetic fabric, with the body made from a pale blue color and the sleeves a white color. A stripe of white fabric runs horizontally around the body below the sleeves. A gray stripe is sewn around each sleeve above the elbow. The jacket closes at the center front with one (1) piece of white Velcro at the neck and four (4) metal snaps down the body. The snaps are painted on the facing side to match the color of the fabric. The neck has a standard collar made from the pale blue fabric. A panel of the blue fabric is folded over to resemble a bowtie and sewn at the center front neck. A shoulder strap made from the blue fabric is sewn at the proper right shoulder with the tip of the strap coming to a point and extending beyond the shoulder seam. The sleeves are full-length and taper slightly toward the wrist. A panel of white fabric is sewn at the cuff of each sleeve shaped with a chevron at the top side of the wrist. On the back of the jacket the name "Terry. Bastin" is machine-embroidered at the proper left side near the hem. Blue fabric letters "RF," for Rockfield Farm, are sewn with a zigzag stitch over the white stripe at the center back.
The interior of the jacket is not lined. A white fabric label with red embroidered text is attached at the interior center back neck reading "Custom Made Silks" followed by the maker's contact information. Black ink is written at the bottom of the label, but is illegible. A long loop of the pale blue fabric is sewn at the bottom of the label with black ink handwritten text reading "IND 734". Blue ink handwritten text at the interior proper left back near the hem reads "NORIS D655".
