- Description
- This tally register (or counter) belonged to Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887), the naturalist who served as the second Secretary of the Smithsonian. The inscription reads “BENTON MFG. CO. / NEW-YORK.” The firm was begun in 1874 by John Barnaby Benton, a civil engineer and inventor, and may have been the first make devices of this sort.
