Match safe, William McKinley, 1890s
Object Details
- Description
- This match safe commemorates William McKinley, twice the successful Republican presidential candidate. Metal match safes, popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, allowed smokers to carry friction matches without fear they would rub together and burst into flame in their pockets. McKinley defeated the same Democratic opponent, William Jennings Bryan, in 1896 and 1900.
